'STOP and search' police powers are being used more fairly and less often in Staffordshire, police said.

There were 7,658 stop and searches in the country in 2009/10, a 26 per cent drop compared to the previous 12 months (10,312).

New guidelines now say that, though there is no legal requirement to give a reason for a stop and search in certain circumstances, people should be given an explanation.

Superintendent Steph Popadynec, said: "Our officers normally give a reason for a stop and search as a matter of course. These changes, introduced across the country, standardise this practice and ensure that stop and search is used as effectively as possible."
