DESPITE THE HURDLES, M'SIA SET

from BERNAMA, The Malaysian National News Agency KUALA LUMPUR, May 8 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian men's team will be playing against all odds in their mission to bring back the Thomas Cup which Malaysia last won in 1992, when the prestigious Thomas and Uber Cup tournament kicks off at the Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil tomorrow.

Led by skipper Datuk Lee Chong Wei, the other men's singles players are Wong Choong Hann, Muhd Hafiz Hashim and Tan Chun Seang while their doubles are Koo Kien Keat/Tan Boon Heong, Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif/Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari and Hoon Tien How/Ong Soon Hock.

Despite the problems which demoralised the players such as the sacking of Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) secretary- general Ganga Rao, the RM2 million incentive debt and communication breakdown among the doubles, the team managed to display patriotism and unison, especially during the team- building course in Port Dickson, three weeks ago.

Rao's case is now over, the government has paid the incentive while the men's doubles, especially Mohd Zakry/Mohd Fairuzizuan, have promised to work closely, in and outside the court.

And a week before the tournament started, the men's singles chief coach, Rashid Sidek, was hospitalised and quarantined when he tested positive for Influenza A (H1N1).

Two days later, Rashids' brother, Misbun, who is also the men's singles coach, was quarantined when three of his children were hospitalised due to high fever.

Rashid and Misbun however, were discharged from their quarantine and resumed duty today.

Judging from the men's team list, the burden still lies with world number one men's singles player Chong Wei, who has been consistent after securing three championships since January.

He began the year by winning the Malaysian Open Super Series in January, and followed up that feat by clinching the Korean Open Super Series the same month and added the prestigious All England singles title in March.

Choong Hann and Hafiz meanwhile, have gone through a lean spell, since last year.

As for the doubles pairs, Koo/Tan won the Malaysia Open Super Series while Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif/Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari remain a competitive pair despite failing to land any title.

Malaysia, seeded third in the Thomas Cup after Indonesia and China, was drawn in Group B, together with the sixth seeds, Japan and minnow Nigeria.

The country is expected to have an easy path against Nigeria but will face resistance against Japan.

Chong Wei however, should be extra careful when playing against the Japanese new star, Kenichi Tago, who pulled a surprise by marching to the Tiffany Jewelry On Sale All England final but the Malaysian beat him in straight sets.

Group A comprises China, South Korea and Peru, Denmark, Germany and Poland in Group C while Indonesia, India and Australia are in Group A.

Two teams from each Group will march to the quarter-finals.

BAM president Datuk Nadzmi Salleh has predicted that only five countries -- China, Indonesia, South Korea, Denmark and Malaysia -- stood a chance to win the prestigious Thomas Cup.

For the first time ever, world governing body, Badminton World Federation (BWF) has changed the Thomas and Uber Cup format by introducing a f

Despite 'excessive' waste foun

HARRISBURG -- In 2001 and 2002, state employees went on a shopping spree at taxpayers' expense: $58,518 spent on catering, $4,014 at beer and liquor stores, watches for retirees that cost $150 each, 1,296 Hershey candy bars for $428, and dozens of other promotional items from sports bags to fly swatters.

links of london charms

All of this occurred at PennDOT, where one employee bought some things for home: food, toiletry items, prescription drugs and basic and premium TV service, according to an audit by former state Auditor General Robert P. Casey Jr., now a Democratic U.S. senator.

The common thread to the purchases is that employees made them with state purchasing or debit cards. The cards are back in the news as a cost-saving method touted last week by House Republicans.

Despite the "abusive" and "excessive" spending tagged in the January 2004 audit, it would be a mistake to write off an expansion of the cards as a way to raise millions for state government, Rep. John Bear, R-Lancaster, the leading proponent, said Monday.

Franck Muller Watch

For the most part, the problem with the expenditures examined in the audit was authorization by state supervisors, not the method of payment, Bear said. Moreover, there are electronic controls that, if utilized, would enable supervisors to see each payout shortly after it's made, he said.

Transportation Secretary Allen Biehler, newly appointed by Rendell in early 2004, moved promptly to establish tighter controls over the cards, the audit said.

Bear, a former management consultant, said the state could save $62 million by moving 20 percent of all purchases through debit cards because the state gets a bonus from the debit card company for each dollar spent. The state uses debit cards for less than 1 percent of transactions, he said.

Republicans offered the idea as one alternative to raising taxes and cutting spending. Pennsylvania faces a $1 billion deficit.

Gary Tuma, spokesman for Democratic Gov. Ed Rendell, said the administration is discussing with state Treasury officials the possibility of increasing use of purchasing cards. Tuma had warned it was necessary to "build in controls" but said yesterday he wasn't specifically referring to the PennDOT audit when he spoke of the need for controls.

However, Tuma said, that is the "type of concern" to which he referred.

"It is important to strike a balance between the benefits of the cards and guarding against the potential for abuse," Tuma said.

The expenditures examined in Casey's audit occurred in PennDOT under Republican Gov. Mark Schweiker.

Banged-up Canadiens skating on

When your shutdown defenseman is checking a bag and not Sidney Crosby, there's a problem.

Montreal Canadiens defenseman Hall Gill is the biggest reason the Penguins' captain remains without a goal in the Eastern Conference semifinal heading into Monday night's Game 6.

But Sunday, Gill was at the Pittsburgh International Airport, getting down and dirty with the rest of the common folk and flying commercial.

Apparently, his pay grade doesn't warrant the private jet treatment teammate Andrei Markov received after injuring his knee after Game 1. Markov was hustled home after that game.

JACQUES LEMANS Replica

So, Sunday, there was Gill at the airport. When you're 6-foot-7, it would be hard to travel incognito -- even less so when you're wearing a grey Montreal Canadiens T-shirt and track pants.

Gill was at the airport with Canadiens team physician Dr. David Mulder -- and not back in Montreal with his teammates who had chartered a flight home after the game -- because he sustained a cut to the back of his leg. He was stepped on by Penguins winger Chris Kunitz early in the third period of the Penguins' 2-1 win in Game 5 on Saturday night that gave the Pens a 3-2 series lead.

Gill's status for Burberry Fake Handbags his flight was confirmed -- his place in the Canadiens lineup for their fourth win-or-play-golf elimination game of these playoffs much less so.

"I hope so," Gill said, when asked if he thought he could play Monday night. "It's only a cut. We'll see."

Gill's condor-like presence on the blue line, along with partner Josh Gorges, was a big reason why the Canadiens were able to eliminate the Presidents' Trophy-winning Washington Capitals in seven games in the first round and come close to battling the defending Stanley Cup champion Penguins to a near standstill in this series.

With or without Gill, the Canadiens will have to win to force a seventh and deciding game Wednesday night in Pittsburgh.

There could be a saving grace for the Habs if Gill can't play.

Veteran defenseman Jaroslav Spacek, out since early in the first round with a virus that apparently left him with bouts of vertigo, is rumored to have been cleared by the medical staff to play. Leaving him out of the lineup for Game 5 Canadiens coach Jacques Martin's decision.

Spacek skated Sunday at the Canadiens' practice facility and looks ready.

Then, there's Markov.

Thomas sabo charms

There was talk in the Habs' camp before Game 5 that he might be able to play if a brace could be made for his knee, which sustained suspected ACL damage early in Game 1.

A source close to the situation told the Ottawa Sun that a lot would depend on how Markov's knee responded to the light skate Sunday. If the swelling wasn't prohibitive, playing isn't out of the question, though his official status remains "out indefinitely."

"It all depends on how it responds," a source close to the situation told the Ottawa Sun before Game 5. "If you can get the swelling out, you can tape it up. Everybody's body is different. He wouldn't be the first guy to play with a damaged ACL

The Canadiens found a way to win three times after they were down, 3-1, to the Capitals, but the jittery Caps had no

Ban on polythene at ghats goes

KANPUR: Although the district authorities have banned the use of polythenes on the ghats, one can still witness devotees using polythenes to carry milk and other stuff to various temples on the ghats.

Tiffany Jewellery sale

On Monday only, a milk-vending machine was installed at Parmat ghat so that devotees do not have to bring milk in polythenes from outside, but the move has not evoked any positive response from the people.

It is to be mentioned that in December 09, the Kanpur Nagar Nigam had declared the ghats as polythene-free zones. It has also prohibited the use of plastic bags and polythenes under Section 437 of the Nagar Nigam Act. The authorities had said that anybody found violating the new rule would be penalised with Rs 200.

More so, expressing deep concern on the increasing pollution in the river Ganga, the division bench of the Allahabad High Court, comprising Justice Ashok Bhushan and Justice Arun Tandon, had recently directed the Ganga Basin Authority and the state government to take appropriate steps to ban the use of polythene in the vicinity of Ganga in the entire state.

Acting swiftly to curb the use of polythene, the district administration officials too had instructed the installation of milk vending machines at temples of five ghats. It was thought that the devotees would not be carrying milk polybags to offer at the temples as the machines would enable the devotees to get the milk from the vending machines.

However, a day after the vending machine was made operational at the Parmat ghat, the milk continued to be sold in the polybags.

While a sign board at the temple wall read 'Mandir parisar mein polythene ka prayog purnatayah varjit hai' (the use of polythene on temple premises is completely prohibited), the milk vendors on the other hand were seen selling milk pouches outside the temple premises without any fear.

The people were seen throwing the used polythenes in one corner, despite the enforcement of the Nagar Nigam Act at the ghats. Devotees were found using polythenes with impunity. Even the shopkeepers at the ghats were seen selling food items and other puja material in plastic bags, at times at the requests of the customers.

Municipal commissioner Vikram Singh said that the measures taken by the district authorities would not materialise unless the people also take the initiative and pledge not to use polythene on the ghats.

"We have issued challan books to our supervisors to penalise people who use polythenes commercially at the ghats. We would gradually increase the amount of fine if people continue to violate the norms. More so, people also need to be informed about the hazards of using plastic items on the ghats," said Singh.

According to a recent report prepared by the Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB) officials on the basis of Replica Twin Barrels Watches a survey, three cubic metres of rotten flowers and leaves are dumped at the Parmat ghat everyday which flow directly into the river Ganga. More than 0.5 cubic metres of polythene and plastic bags are disposed of at the ghat, while other solid waste amounts to 1.5 cubic metre.

Radhey Shyam, a UPPCB official, said that the public sewage that gets discharged into the river through the ghat is as high as five kilo litres per hour.

Guthrie's 'Greatest Show on Ea

Clowns, singing and comedy acts, including bag ladies, Keystone Kops, and more, will be part of the 2010 Guthrie circus.

Thanks to nearly 200 physicians and staff who are volunteering their time to put on the greatest show on earth, the evening of Saturday, May 15, will be a night to remember. The show starts at 6:30 p.m.

What makes this circus special is that instead of live animals and a "big top," all the entertaining and humorous acts will be performed by Guthrie's physicians and staff under the lights at the Waverly High School auditorium. The Guthrie circus even has a plot that will keep the audience on the edge of their seats and rolling in the aisles. An elephant in need of medical care is at the center of the show, with a variety of skits and acts performed in the quest for appropriate care.

Some of the featured acts include the "little people," "ladies of the mop," clowns, bears, monkeys, lions, dancers, a chorus called "neat stitches," the jolly green giant, and more. A special appearance will be made by an actor portraying Dr. Guthrie as he joins the effort to save the elephant and in the process discovers the "key to the future."

The circus has an interesting history, and is being held this year as a part of the milestone celebrations of Guthrie Clinic (100 years) and Robert Packer Hospital (125 years). The first circus was held in the gymnasium of the Nurses Home in 1947. There were so many tickets sold that the event was held three nights to accommodate everyone who wanted to see the show. Originally a fund-raising event, the circus was sponsored by the graduate and student nurses. Their goal was to raise enough money to buy a small piano for the Nurses Home Living Room. They needed $200 and cleared $900 on the event.

The circus was so well received that it was staged again in 1948, but was moved to the Sayre High School gymnasium to accommodate the 1,500 persons that attended the event, 500 more than the year before. A third circus was organized in 1949 and it too was a sell out. Miss Dorothy Fischler, RN, was director of the first three circuses.

The circus returned in 1985 as part of the 100th Gucci Replica Watches anniversary celebration of Robert Packer Hospital and then again in 1988, both times under the talented leadership of Mary Truesdale, who was the director of volunteers. This latest incarnation of Guthrie's Greatest Show on Earth is once again under the direction of Truesdale.

Tickets are $2 each and are available until May 14 or until they are sold out at the following locations: the RPH Gift Shop, Sayre House Nursing Home, Troy Community Hospital, or by stopping by the Organizational Development Department at Guthrie, second level, School of Nursing Building. Tickets are also available at the Sayre Public Library.

76ers trade Dalembert to Kings for Hawes, Nocioni

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Samuel Dalembert got his wish.
The Philadelphia 76ers traded Dalembert to the Sacramento Kings on Thursday for Andres Nocioni and Spencer Hawes.
Dalembert asked for a trade last year because he was unhappy with his role. Now, he got it.
"We are excited to add two players in Spencer Hawes and Andres Nocioni who will help us immediately and provide us with additional frontcourt depth," Sixers general manager Ed Stefanski said in a statement. "Spencer is a young seven-footer who will provide us with versatility at the center position, while Andres will provide us with a tough veteran presence."
Dalembert was Philadelphia's longest-tenured player, but he played for seven different coaches and never developed into a dominant force after being drafted in the first round in 2001. The 6-foot-11 center averaged 8.1 points and 8.3 rebounds over eight seasons, and often was mentioned in trade rumors.
He joins a team that was 25-57 and had the second-worst majorica Wood Bangles record in the Western Conference.
"He will certainly bring a defensive presence and increase our ability to defend around the basket with his rebounding, shot-blocking and athleticism," Kings president Geoff Petrie said. "I think he'll add a very different look to our team defensively and we're really excited about having him."
Nocioni, a 6-foot-7 forward, averaged 8.5 points fake rolex for the Kings last season. He was suspended two games in March after pleading no contest in California to drunken driving.
Hawes, a 7-foot-1 center, averaged 10 points and 6.1 rebounds last season. He was Sacramento's first-round draft pick in 2007.
Nocioni and Hawes join a rebuilding team that missed the playoffs last season and has the No. 2 overall pick in next week's draft.
The Sixers have a new coach in Doug Collins, some talented players already on the roster and expect to improve significantly after an awful 27-win season.
Dalembert, the NBA's only Haitian-born player, went to Haiti in January with the aid group Project MediShare to assist with the earthquake relief effort.
The 29-year-old Dalembert was scheduled to earn nearly $13 million in the final year of his contract. He has a 15 percent trade kicker in his deal. That clause made it difficult for the Sixers to trade him sooner.
Nocioni began his NBA career with the Chicago Bulls in 2004 and was traded to the Kings during the 2008-09 season. He's averaged 11.3 points and 4.7 rebounds over his career. The 30-year-old Nocioni is a rugged player who adds toughness at the small forward position.
Nocioni helped Argentina win the gold medal in the 2004 Summer Olympics and the bronze in '08.
Hawes, the 10th overall pick three years ago, has averaged 8.8 points and 5.5 rebounds in his career. He's not as effective as Dalembert at blocking shots, but fits in better at center.
Stefanski may not be done dealing. The addition of Nocioni gives Hermes Fake Handbags Philadelphia three players - Andre Iguodala and Thaddeus Young are the others - whose best position is small forward. Iguodala has been Philadelphia's shooting guard, but Ohio State star Evan Turner can play that spot if the Sixers take him with the No. 2 pick.
