Play goes back in time to earl

THE CENTER FRONT Players go retro for their latest production, "The Good Old Days of Radio and Television."

On Saturday, Feb. 6, Sunday, Feb. 7, Saturday, Feb. 13, and Sunday, Feb. 14, the Thomas A. Baum Senior Center-based troupe will perform an episode of the radio comedy "The Bickersons."

The original program starred Don Ameche and Frances Langford as husband-and-wife John and Blanche Bickerson, who had what marriage counselors might call "issues."

Bitingly funny, but with a genuine sense of affection, the show was must-hear radio from 1946 to 1951 on NBC and CBS.

For the local production, the Baum Center will be turned into a old-time radio studio, with a sound effects guy, an off-stage announcer, on-air lights and actors seated at Prada Leather Handbags a table reading scripts into microphones.

"We wanted to recreate what it was like to sit in the dark and imagine," said Tom Filkins, 70, the show's director. "Most of the old radio shows were done live."

Filkins also plays John Bickerson, with Sharon Thompson and Jane Smallwood rotating in the role of Blanche Bickerson.

And that's only Act I.

For the second part of the show, a quartet - Jerry Manolas, Dick Gillespie, Sheila Diehm and Loretta Fertal - will recreate "Your Hit Parade."

The popular radio and TV program, sponsored by Lucky Strike cigarettes, featured the top songs of the day, which means you'll hear such '40s and '50s classics as "Mack the Knife," "Volare" and "The Wayward Wind."

The Dare2Danzers also will get into the act.

"If I look into the audience and see anyone under 60," said Filkins, who lives in Manns Harbor, during a telephone interview, "I may have to do a little talk about the old days."
